- 12c., aventure, from O.Fr. aventure, from V.L. *adventura "a happening," from L. future participle of advenire "to come about," from ad- "to" + venire "come." Original meaning was "to arrive," in Latin, but took a turn through "chance," then "risk/danger" (a trial of one's chances), then "perilous undertaking." Hence, "a novel or exciting incident" (1570).
